Hello *|FNAME|*,

Well what a month that was with the CrowdStrike issue taking a lot of servers and computers down. Luckily we only have a small number of clients using CrowdStrike, but it did take down one of our email hosting servers so I apologise for the clients that were affected. The event did demonstrate the need for redundancy and having other ways to perform regular office tasks. If you would like further information on the issue or talk about ways you can avoid having a single point of failure for your business please let me know.

On the topic of security, we highly recommend that everyone (including their staff and families) enroll and go through the free cyber security course developed by the Australian government at cyberwardens.com.au. This provides a great starting point in your cyber security training. Remember that training is an ongoing effort and needs to performed on an ongoing basis so people can refresh their knowledge and learn about the latest issues.

Currently businesses with a turnover over $3 million per year are subject to specific privacy laws. Later this year new legislation will be coming that extends these laws to all businesses. As such businesses will need to start looking at their privacy policies and subsequently their security posture right now. Remember that the better your systems are now, the less the costs it will be will be to uplift your privacy compliance when it really matters. You will also be one step ahead of your competitors.

In our latest cyber security blog, we have some simple ways in which you can start to improve your security. As with a lot of IT, it can be confusing and our advice is to start with the basics listed in our blog, perform the free Cyber Wardens training listed above and move on from there. If you need help with this please let us know.

That's it for this month, stay cyber safe and will catch you online (or in real life!).

Out and About

As you all know, IT is always changing and as IT techs we need to keep up on the latest. During July:

  • All the Adelaide techs attended the monthly Adelaide SMBiT meeting. Last month they learnt about security frameworks, the latest in wireless and networking from Cambium and how to secure email (via SPF, SKIM and DMARC).
  • David, Sam and Malcolm attended the Pax8 Mission Briefing at Adelaide Oval. There they learnt about the latest in security, backup and IT from vendors such as Pax8, Infosure, Check Point, Acronis, bvoip, LastPass, Avanan and Dropsuite.
  • One of our Sydney based techs, Fahim, completed the training and certification for OCNA (Dlink Omada Certified Network Administrator) course!
  • At the Adelaide Convention Centre, we had Zee, Sean, Rebecca and Craig setting up over 200 systems and monitors for a conference.

There are a few events happening in Adelaide during August, with a security conference and then a supplier expo at the Adelaide Convention Center. Fahim will also be expanding his networking knowledge by attending a DLink training course in Sydney. Stefan will also be presenting on Cambium Networks latest firewall and networking gear at this months SMBiT meeting.

David leading the Adelaide chapter of SMBiT Professionals.

SMBiT Professionals are the peak Australian body for IT service providers who specialise in small and medium business. David has been a member since their start in 2011 and is proud to lead the local Chapter for the past 3 years.

David, Sam and Malcolm had some time to enjoy the scenery at Adelaide Oval while learning the latest in tech from a variety of vendors.

A big thank you to Pax8 for the invite and it was great to talk directly to some of our vendors including Infosure, Check Point, Acronis, bvoip, LastPass, Avanan and Dropsuite.

Congratulations to one of our Sydney techs, Fahim, who completed the training and certification for OCNA (Dlink Omada Certified Network Administrator) course.

At the Adelaide Convention Centre, we had Zee, Sean, Rebecca and Craig setting up over 200 systems and monitors for a conference. This was split up over the main expo hall as well as other meeting and training rooms.

Not to be outdone, our Sydney techs have been at a number of data centres in and around the city.

They have been busy replacing hard dives, motherboards and installing new servers.
